WHO WE ARE
The City of Visalia's Community Development Department Planning Division provides both strategic planning and development project review services to the City Council, Planning Commission, Citizens of Visalia and the development community. The Division is responsible for:
- Maintaining the City's General Plan, Zoning Ordinance and Specific Plans.
- Prepares studies and reports such as demographics, land absorption trends, and development entitlement.
The Division’s staff are committed to customer service, safety, and providing high-quality environmental and planning support and services to other City Departments and the Public
THE POSITION
The City of Visalia is recruiting for Assistant/Associate Planner, depending on qualifications (DOQ), which will be responsible for a variety of planning processes and various development including current planning, advance planning, environmental review and may also:
- Perform land-use planning and preparation of specific plans.
- Assist with updates to General Plan elements including the Housing Element.
- Perform research and provide public assistance.
- Presentations to Planning Commission, City Council and community groups.
- Assisting in the preparation of the weekly Site Plan Review agenda.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
The ideal candidate will possess a high level of professionalism, sound knowledge of planning, have customer service skills, presentation skills and demonstrated track record of successfully completing projects. The position requires excellent judgement, integrity, and organization skills. The ideal candidate will
- Have planning experience in current planning, zoning text updates, annexations, specific plans, housing,
and CEQA. - Be able to effectively communicate with coworkers, supervisors, support staff and outside stakeholders to successfully deliver projects.
- Be a self-driven individual, willing to take on new challenges, and flexibility to function in current and
long range planning. - Be willing to work on and manage multiple projects at any given time.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Assistant Planner
- Previous technical planning experience.
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in planning, architecture,
landscape architecture, economics, geography, public administration or a related field.
Associate Planner
- One year of increasingly responsible experience in a municipal or county planning department.
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in planning, architecture,
landscape architecture, economics, geography, public administration or a related field
